Moving Well in the Year of the Horse

Happy New Year! 2026 puts us in the Year of the Horse, which is the 7th of the 12-year cycle of animals in the Chinese calendar. Based on predictions, 2026 is going to be spicy. Like our favourite horse, it will favour bold forward momentum and the impulsivity to make moves (or spook!). Navigating the Year of the Horse will require openness to embrace momentum, while also staying grounded enough to avoid burnout. Here are a couple ways to approach and anticipate the Year of the Horse:

Face Forward Momentum, with Intentionality

Just like any time spent with horses, we always need to remain intentional with our direction. It’s important to say yes to growth and new directions, but not impulsively. Horse acts quickly but are also sensitive, so listen to your body’s nervous system to remain aware of moments where we are rushing or taking on too much at once. Take the time to notice your body and physical sensations that may be warning you a pause is needed. Pause, regulate and allow yourself space and time to figure out your next steps intentionally, rather than reacting.

Care for Your Energy

Horse energy is powerful but can burn fast. In anticipation of chaos, it’s important to prioritize your well-being by scheduling and pre-planning rest, self-care and routines that promote calmness. Pre-planned routines can help create a sense of predictability, helping to manage stress and maintain a sustainable pace. Consider treating your wellness activities, like non-negotiable appointments in your calendar to ensure they happen, rather than being sidelined or ignored. You’ll thank your future self!

Let Emotions Flow

Horses respond to what’s real, not what’s hidden. When authentic, we are honest with ourselves by not pretending everything is fine, but rather acknowledging what’s really happening inside us. Throughout the year, we may feel the urge or impulse to act on emotions, and emotional authenticity allows us to notice the emotion, name it honestly and choose a response that aligns with our best interests. The more we practice, the more trusting we become in ourselves and the ability to handle discomfort which brings calmness amongst the chaos.

The Year of the Horse will favour momentum and freedom, but will need to be balanced by courage, honesty, and self-awareness. The goal should be to move forward, but move wisely. Wishing you all the best in 2026!
